Featured Musicians: Sun City Music Players
Laura Caldwell has been singing all her life, to herself. It’s only been in the last few years that she’s allowed herself the chance to pursue singing for the sheer joy of it. In 2010 she and guitarist, Al Carness, started “working up a few songs.” Laura is drawn to songs that touch her heart, from Pop and Folk to Blues. She has a blast when she sees people in the audience singing along with her when she covers some of her familiar favorites.
Al Carness has had a long love affair with the guitar. At age 10, after listening to one of his sister’s Elvis 45s, Al took up the guitar and hasn’t put it down since. Playing in touring bands since the ripe age of 14, Al has played it all, starting out in the Rock ‘n’ Roll of the 50s, to Surf, Jazz, Blues, Classic Rock, and now Country with Portland’s Concrete Cowboys. He will tell you how much he enjoys playing acoustic on his favorite ’54 Martin D-28. Al provides a blend of dynamic finger-picking styles and riffs that audiences and other musicians love.
Al and Laura play in venues from Portland, Oregon, to Port Townsend, Washington. Their audiences often tell Laura and Al how much they enjoy the chemistry when they perform together. To learn more visit their website: www.suncityplayers.com
Featured Local Artist: Karla Piatt
Our featured local artist is Karla Piatt. Karla's art is mixed media fused glass paintings and will be adorning our walls in February and March. "Art is like the air we breathe. Through - warm glass and acrylic painting, I have found an avenue to express myself in ways I had never dreamed. Each design is composed of one piece of fused glass, personally designed and hand cut, mounted onto a reinforced uniquely designed canvas. My goal with warm glass is to find a way to express myself through pushing the boundaries of technology - why do we need two layers of glass? How much open space is feasible. The answers to these and other questions have led me to some amazing creations. I have not yet reached my limit and to push to larger and more complex pieces." Please visit her website to learn more!
